Free AI video generators: what you actually get (2026)
Almost every AI video tool advertises a free plan. The honest version: free tiers exist to let you judge the output style, not to run a channel on. Limits (watermarks, generation caps, short durations) vary and change often — but the free tier is still the right way to shortlist. Here's the smart order to try things, by use case.
Avatar presenter videos
Synthesia and HeyGen both offer free plans with a small monthly video allowance — enough to make one or two test videos and compare avatar quality with your own script. Do exactly that before paying: the "which avatar looks natural" judgment is personal.
Cinematic prompt-to-video
Runway, Pika and Kling all have free credit tiers. Free generations are limited and may queue behind paid users, but style differences show up immediately — run the same prompt through all three. Google Veo also offers limited free generations in the Gemini app; its best models sit behind paid Google AI plans. (OpenAI's Sora, if you were looking for it, was discontinued in April 2026.)
Script-to-video and editing
VEED and Descript have usable free editor tiers (with export limits or watermarks). Pictory offers a trial rather than a permanent free plan, and InVideo has a free tier with watermarked exports.
The one-hour shortlist method
1. Pick your category (presenter / cinematic / script-to-video). 2. Sign up for the top two free tiers in that category. 3. Run the same script or prompt through both. 4. Pay for the winner — monthly, not annual, until it survives a month of real use. Our quiz picks the category for you, and the comparison table has current starting prices.
